Daniel Moore: Stories in Knife and Paper: Exploring and Playing with Narrative through Paper Cutting

April 1, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

13269

What moves you about paper cutting? Is it the care spent crafting delicate pieces of paper into beautiful works of art? Or the skill it takes to construct an intricate picture out of everyday stationery? For me, it’s the stories suggested by those fragments of paper. The lives they hint at in their permanent resting states.

In this workshop, we’ll explore the story-telling powers of paper cutting. Bring your beverage of choice and wide-eyed imagination and get inspired by paper cutters from around the world who tell stories in knife and paper. We’ll look at tableaux, storybooks, vignettes, collages, and other narratives that use different paper cutting techniques. Bonus marks if you bring your own example of a story using paper cutting!

We’ll also look at one WIP project that uses stills from silent film and collage (@thecorsicanvendetta on Instagram), and create our own mini dramas using source materials provided. Then wrap up with a show and tell!

It’ll be like imagination time, but with lots of tiny knives ✂️✂️✂️

About the Instructor: Daniel Moore works by day raising funds for a disAbility charity and writes creatively by night/early morning. He also has a PhD in literature and likes noisy cats. Instagram: @thecorsicanvendetta
