Quiet Terrors, Quiet Joys – solo show by GAP member Janelle Washington

26 July 2023 @ 8:00 am 4 September 2023 @ 5:00 pm EDT

A solo exhibition by Janelle Washington. This exhibit – Quiet Terrors, Quiet Joys – delves into the complex and often misunderstood realm of mental health. Inspired by mental health’s invisible yet pervasive nature, I created an anonymous survey to gather first-hand insights from individuals. Using the information from the survey, I translate the participant’s emotions into visual representations of an insect or small animal. The chosen creatures serve as powerful metaphors, embodying the emotions and struggles of the participant’s unique daily experiences. My hope is that by shedding light on mental health, I can promote a greater appreciation for the complexities of the human mind and encourage conversations that lead to healing and support.

Janelle Washington is a paper-cut and silhouette artist from Richmond, VA, and longtime GAP member. Janelle is an extremely active and successful artist who has worked with CAC before. Janelle has commissioned silhouettes housed at The Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History, her work has been shown in Oprah Magazine, and she has been the recipient of multiple awards for illustration, design, and more. Her work is so intricate, beautiful, and relevant to today’s world, Chesapeake Arts Center is lucky to have a chance to work with her. Be sure to stop by Gallery 194 in August or September to see this one!
