I’m a writer and amateur paper cutter working on a digital comic called The Corsican Vendetta made out of analog collage.

My characters and scenes are taken from content mostly in the public domain or released under royalty free licenses. I assemble them to create a long from comic or graphic novel (a murder mystery, actually) with elements of stop-motion animation. I find most of my scenes and background images from paintings on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s digital database, Flickr, Wikimedia, and the New York Public Library. My characters are taken from silent films. I use Buster Keaton for my protagonist (Francis Alan Parker), Colleen Moore for his best friend (Angioletta), Rudolph Valentino (Amiable) for a love interest, and more. Each character pose and gesture is digitally captured frame by frame, then printed and cut out of paper.

While collage usually favours juxtaposition, I strive to create a feeling of continuity that rivals film. It’s a task that I find intensely absorbing because it involves slowly piecing together thousands of unrelated parts to create the impression that they always belonged together.
